Mepal 2008
Let me start by telling you about Mercer’s Moat. Dear old Kev took his dog out for a walk one evening at Mepal after a few beers. To be fair it was after midnight so quite dark. As they sauntered across the field Kev suddenly found himself on his back with Loxley on top of him looking up at the stars. As he lay there he realised he was down a rather deep ditch, fortunately dry, but still quite a climb to regain the level ground. So forever more Langtoft Fen will now be known as Mercer’s Moat. Kev is still with us, he did survive the fall.
We were few and far between at Mepal, just four families but we managed to hold our own with our fellow revellers.
This year we had offered to assist EAWN with the cooking and our trusted members dressed appropriately with blue faces, smurf hats and white aprons adorned with a pertinent message in French ….
Keith – I’m not pregnant I’m just fat
Kev – Bald and beautiful
Ben – I’m standing next to an idiot
Ange – Yes I have washed my hands
(she had been grooming all day)
Linda – I am really old
Becks – I live with my Mummy
Sue – Customer complaints department
Robin – I like to dress as a woman
Our theme this year went down a storm and was happily received by all, the French in particular seemed delighted to have been included.
The Leybournes had some significant battery challenges over the weekend and ran out of juice completely despite the purchase of a new battery. The Scotts had to purchase a new tap which came with the most astonishing price tag but at least it stopped the leak. The Mercers simply could not get their fridge to stay on so between us we struggled to maintain our usual high quality of living.
Jinny spent all weekend over in the marquee buying cakes whilst Jeffy befriended a couple of boys next door and learnt how to play rugby. It was their best weekend ever on the caravan but they missed their usual playmates.
A mercy dash to the vet on the last night ended the weekend in a truly expensive way but at least Millie got the medication she needed which enabled her (and the rest of us) to get some sleep.
Next year it’s the 20th anniversary of Mepal so it’s bound to be a good one, hope to see you there.
